Overview

Every young person is unique. As someone who works with students, you know this and work hard to make sure everyone is given the chance to thrive. A big part of doing so involves understanding the individual needs and experiences of all the young people you work with. This includes students with autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder which produces differences in behaviour, social interaction, and communication.

You may work with students who are autistic or might’ve noticed young people exhibiting autistic traits. If that’s the case, you need to make sure you’re equipped with the necessary skills and understanding to support them. This course will show you how.

Outline Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise that ASD is a spectrum, to effectively support students with a diagnosis or traits of ASD in an educational setting
  • Identify early signs of ASD, to be able to recognise these characteristics in students and provide extra support when necessary
  • Describe inclusive practices for children with ASD, to be able to teach students effectively
