Cyber Security for Remote & Hybrid Workers eLearning Course
Overview
Remote and hybrid work has changed where the real cyber risk sits: your home network, personal devices, public Wi-Fi and video calls. This practical, jargon-free course shows distributed workers how to secure a home network and devices, work safely away from home, and verify people and requests when you cannot simply walk over and ask. Four short units.
Target Audience
Anyone who works remotely or in a hybrid pattern, at any level and in any function. No technical background required.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will gain a full and clear understanding of:
- What genuinely changes about cyber security risk when working outside a managed office network
- How to secure a home router, Wi-Fi network and smart devices in practical depth
- How to draw a clear line between personal and work devices and data
- How to work safely from cafes, co-working spaces and while travelling, including on public Wi-Fi and video calls
- How to use a VPN and understand zero trust access in plain terms
- How to verify a colleague’s identity or an unusual request without being able to walk over to their desk
Features and Benefits
- Written for complete beginners: practical, jargon-free and easy to follow.
- Current and fact-checked: researched against up-to-date 2026 sources, including the latest case studies and regulation.
- Four short, focused units with gated progression; each unit unlocks once the previous one is passed.
- Light, formative interactions running through every unit (click-to-reveal, quick knowledge checks and estimate-and-reveal sliders), never scored.
- An end-of-unit quiz that finishes with a marking screen showing which answers were right or wrong, with a short explanation for each.
- Easy retakes: a failed quiz drops the learner straight back into freshly shuffled questions, with no need to click through the unit again.
- Optional audio narration on every screen (the learner chooses to listen), plus narrated motion-graphic video introductions, with captions throughout for accessibility.
- Responsive layout, suitable for PC, tablet and mobile.
- SCORM 1.2 conformant (single SCO); reports completion and an averaged score to any compliant LMS.
Course Contents
Unit 1: Why Distributed Work Changes Your Risk Profile
- What a managed office network quietly protects you from, and what disappears when you work elsewhere
- Why your home network and personal devices become part of the business’s attack surface
- Why verifying a person or a request is harder without the ability to just glance across the office
- A real case where attackers deliberately targeted a distributed, remote-working team
Unit 2: Securing Your Home Network and Devices
- Router hardening in practical depth: default passwords, firmware and encryption
- Setting up and using a guest network to separate smart devices from your work device
- Smart devices as individual attack points, and the personal and work device boundary (BYOD)
- Family and shared device risk at home
Unit 3: Working Safely Away From Home
- Public Wi-Fi, evil twin networks, and using a VPN properly
- Zero trust access explained in plain English
- The physical risks of cafes, co-working spaces and business travel
- Video call and virtual meeting security, including verifying who is on a call
Unit 4: The Human Side of Distributed Work
- Why trust and identity are harder to verify at a distance
- A real case where a single phone call to a help desk led to a breach costing around $100 million
- Verifying a colleague’s identity or an unusual request when you cannot walk over and ask
- Staying connected to a security culture, and a personal remote-work security checklist
