Smart Contracts for Business eLearning Course
Overview
Smart contract is one of the most confidently used, least understood terms in blockchain. This practical, jargon-free course gives business managers a clear view of what a smart contract really is and isn't, where it genuinely earns its place, why oracles shape how much any arrangement can be trusted, and what a real 2016 failure still teaches about testing. Four short units.
Learning Objectives
Upon course completion, employees will gain a full and clear understanding of:
- What a smart contract is, and what it is not, in plain language
- Where automating a trusted business rule genuinely helps, from escrow releases to milestone payments
- Why a smart contract does not by itself create a binding legal agreement
- What an oracle is and why a contract is only as reliable as the data feeding it
- Why a flaw in deployed code can be effectively permanent, illustrated by a real 2016 case
- How to scope a first smart contract use case sensibly, and test it properly before real value is at stake
Course Contents
Unit 1: What a Smart Contract Actually Is
- Self-executing, deterministic code and how it runs
- Why a smart contract is not, by itself, a legally binding document
- Why it does not override ordinary contract or consumer protection rules
- Why it is never a substitute for a properly agreed contract between the parties
Unit 2: Where Smart Contracts Genuinely Help
- Escrow-style conditional release, automated fee splits and supply chain milestone payments
- The gap between automating performance and creating a legal agreement
- Signs a process is a good candidate for automation, and signs it is not
- Pairing automation with a properly drafted underlying agreement
Unit 3: Oracles: The Bridge to the Real World
- Why a smart contract can only see data already on its own blockchain
- What an oracle is and the kinds of real-world data it typically feeds in
- Why a contract is only ever as trustworthy as its oracle
- Practical questions to ask before relying on any oracle-fed smart contract
Unit 4: What Goes Wrong, and Getting It Right
- Why a flaw in deployed code can be effectively permanent
- The DAO (2016): a real smart-contract failure and its lasting lesson
- The enforceability caveat: what to check before relying on a smart contract
- Scoping a first use case sensibly and testing before real value is at stake
