You’re halfway through lunch duty when a child suddenly goes quiet. They’re scratching their neck, their breathing sounds… off. In seconds, a normal day can turn into an emergency. Allergic reactions can escalate quickly, and anaphylaxis can be life-threatening.

The difference between a close call and a crisis is often as simple as how quickly you act. Knowing what to look for and what to do next is essential. The challenge is that symptoms can appear quickly and change just as fast.

What may start off as mild can escalate into something much more serious. So, how do you recognise what’s happening and know when it’s critical? What should you do first, and what should you avoid?

This course will answer these questions. All school staff are now legally obliged to learn this information. This includes those teaching in a classroom, supervising in the lunchroom, or at a before-or after-school club. After all, it can help save a life.

By the end of this course you'll be able to:

• Recognise the signs of an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis so you can act quickly to keep a child safe
• Identify the correct response to an anaphylaxis emergency, to give treatment without delay
• Recognise how to use an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI – e.g., EpiPen or Jext) safely, to confidently save a life

This course is for people who want to better understand the issues surrounding neglect. If you work in a field that involves children and vulnerable adults, This course has been designed to keep any children in your care safe, so is suitable for all school staff. That includes teachers, senior teachers, support staff, catering staff, or anyone who might oversee children and young people at breakfast or after-school clubs. It’ll teach you the signs of an allergic reaction and how to react to it quickly. It’ll also give you the confidence to use an AAI if you ever need to.
